The roads to environmental infamy are not easy to follow. On a bumpy dirt track among rickety stilted houses near the Mekong River in Laos there’s a compound surrounded by cinder-block walls topped with barbed wire and barred by iron gates. A security guard at the gate boasted to an investigator that tigers, bears, lizards, pangolins and ivory tusks were inside. On a cellphone, his boss Vixay Keosavang, denied it, saying: ‘There is nothing there. Who told you about it?’.
