On a recent trip to Australia, South African conservationist Ian Michler addressed Environment Minister Greg Hunt on the prevalence of canned hunting in South Africa.
During Michler’s visit, Hunt announced to media that Australia plans on enforcing a permanent ban on the importation of lion parts and lion trophies into Australia by the end of the year.
Over 700 captive-bred lions are shot as canned hunts in South Africa annually.
Canned lion hunting, a sport where lions are bred specifically to be shot in enclosed areas, is legal in South Africa.
